FAQ
Where is the school?
We are in a small village, with ample free parking, just 5 miles from Junction 3 of the A3M.
What sort of people attend these courses?
Anyone and everyone! Our courses are small and friendly, and are suitable for people from all walks of life. Some students will be existing therapists, looking to add new skills to their range, and some will be just doing the course for their own pleasure, and maybe to work on family and friends.
Will I be able to get a job with my new qualifications?
When you successfully complete your chosen course you will be awarded the SSBT diploma. With this you can
join one of the professional associations and obtain insurance. This is sufficient for many salons or if
you wish to work for yourself.
However, should you wish to obtain further qualifications, you may go on to take the
VTCT qualification (VRQ) through home study, creating a portfolio and an assessment session at our school. There is an additional charge for this.
How much is it to obtain further VTCT qualifications?
Between £50 - £80 per module. This fee covers everything you will need. We will
send you a portfolio pack, which tells you exactly how to put your portfolio together.
This fee also covers marking that portfolio, use of our products and equipment during
assessment, and the registration fee we pay to the awarding body VTCT.
What sort of information goes into the portfolio?
Case studies: this is evidence of all the people you have practiced on, client record cards, treatment records, etc, plus before and after photographs in some cases.
Essential knowledge: these are question and answer sheets covering all the theory you learnt on the course and from your manual.
VTCT assessment booklet: this is completed by you to show you have covered a wide range of different clients and situations, and is completed by the assessor when you come back for assessment.
What happens on the assessment day?
You come back to our centre when you feel ready - as previously mentioned this
could even be 3 years from doing the course if you wish! But most students arrange
assessment within say six months. You carry out the treatment on a model and complete a written test.
You will be informed on the day if you have been successful. If you are not successful
you can arrange a re-take.
Why are the courses so much shorter than at a state college?
Our students are extremely motivated and keen to learn and we only have a maximum of six students on a course. In a college you would spend a major part of each day on theory, whereas we spend most of the day concentrating on practical training, with a lot of the theory covered by home study, with the use of our manuals and recommended books.
Are there any hidden costs, i.e. kits to buy?
No, we do not insist on the purchase of any kits. Nor do we try to sell products to you on the day. We think you should be able to choose which product ranges you want to use, and do not promote any one brand.
We provide all the products you will need on the day to practice with and are able to give you help and advice on different suppliers available.
Are the course lecturers properly qualified?
Yes, they hold professional and teaching qualifications, and are recognised by the awarding body VTCT as qualified assessors. They also have years of experience working in commercial salons.
What arrangements do you have for somebody with special needs?
Please telephone us to discuss your individual requirements. We can, for example, arrange for written tests to be answered orally if you have reading/writing difficulties, and if English is not your first language you may bring an interpreter with you.
Whatever your needs we will do our very best to accommodate them.
What if I feel I need extra tuition before I am confident with my new skills?
If for any reason you are not completely happy with everything, we will arrange for you to attend the course again free of charge!
What should I wear to the course?
If you have a therapist uniform, please do wear it. If not we provide tabards to be worn over your clothes. For hygiene reasons we ask you to have short, varnish free nails, hair tied back and no jewellery except a wedding band.
Do I need to bring a model, or do we work on each other?
You will work on fellow students as we feel it is beneficial for you to also receive the treatment; this gives you more empathy with your clients. If, however you are unable to receive a treatment for any reason, please telephone the office to discuss model arrangements.
I want to do several courses at once, is there somewhere local I can stay?
Yes, accommodation is available nearby, from £25 per night. Please contact us for details.
Will I need to bring a packed lunch?
You can if you wish, although there is a café and bakers a few doors down, and a
co-op if you wish to purchase food and bring it back to the centre. We provide tea, coffee, biscuits etc.
